🌱 Invisible network

🌳 Trees also talk: the invisible network of the forest and our own connection

🌿 Discover how trees cooperate through an underground network... and what we can learn from it as humans.

1️⃣ What is the Wood Wide Web?

Beneath our feet, amidst the apparent silence of the forest 🌲, there exists a living and constantly active network that connects trees and plants: the one known as Wood Wide Web 🌐.

This term, coined by Canadian biologist Suzanne Simard 🧬, describes the underground interconnection created by tree roots and mycelia 🍄 —the fungal structures that act as communication bridges.

This network allows trees to:

  • 🌱 nutrients are exchanged
  • ⚠️ warning signals are sent
  • 🔄 maintain the ecological balance of the forest

👉 It's not a curiosity. It's a form of collective intelligence.

2️⃣ How do trees communicate?

When a tree suffers from a pest 🐛, it can emit chemical signals through its roots and mycelium, alerting neighboring trees 🗣️🌳. Upon receiving the alert, these trees can activate their defenses before being attacked.

It has also been observed that:

  • 🌳🌱 Older trees can transfer carbon to younger ones
  • 🤝 help each other in times of need

🌿 An ecological cooperation that dismantles the idea that nature is just a constant struggle.

3️⃣ The essential role of fungi

Mycorrhizal fungi 🍄 establish a symbiotic relationship with tree roots. In exchange for sugar 🍬, they provide a dense network that can extend up to tens of meters 📏.

This network:

  • 💡 Improve communication
  • 💧 Facilitates the exchange of nutrients
  • 🌍 Maintains the overall health of the forest

Without them, this “green internet” would not exist.
They are the true invisible engineers of the forest.

4️⃣ What does the forest teach us?

Trees offer us a profound lesson:

💚 Life is interdependence.
🌲 They don't grow alone. They don't survive alone.

They remind us that:

  • 👂 Listen
  • 🤲 Help
  • 💬 Communicate

...are keys to common well-being.

In a fast-paced ⏱️ and often individualistic world, the forest invites us to look within:
Silent, patient, invisible... but deeply connected.

5️⃣ How to reconnect?

When you walk through the forest 🚶‍♂️🌳, stop for a moment.
Observe the roots 👣, touch the bark ✋, sit quietly near an old tree 🪵.

You don't need to understand everything.
You must listen with respect.

A Els Avets, we believe that every encounter with nature is an opportunity to:

  • 🌱 Reconnect with the natural world
  • 💞 And also with our emotional and human network

6️⃣ Want to know more?

📝 We are preparing a new article where we will explore how to apply this natural wisdom to everyday living:

  • 👧 with the children
  • ❤️ with the couple
  • 🤝 and in the world of work
